The PTA (Piano Tuners' Association) is one of the two UK professional trade bodies for piano tuners, protecting and promoting the piano tuning industry, as well as protecting customers, through its strict entry requirements, which include an examination of practical ability, the pass mark for which is nearly twice the percentage needed to obtain a standard honours degree in the UK!
By using a PTA qualified tuner (look for the letters MPTA after the tuner's name), you are ensuring that you use somebody well qualified, and with at least five years' experience (the earliest length of time in the industry that a tuner can take the PTA entry test).
Your piano may well be one of the most expensive things in your house, so it makes sense to have it looked after regularly, by a tuner with an industry recognised qualification (and the industry generally suggests twice a year for a piano with average use in the UK, where there are regular major changes in seasons, which affects the humidity within a property, which in turn, affects the tuning of your piano).
